PETALING JAYA: It is premature of Deputy Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar to dismiss Azlan Mohd Lazim’s statement as something with no value, said former Kuala Lumpur CID chief Mat Zain Ibrahim.

“It’s too early to say that the expose has no value and cannot be used, especially when you have yet to take his statement,” he added in an open letter to Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar.

Last week, Azlan, 60, the father of Saiful Bukhari Azlan, said that Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim was innocent of the charges in Sodomy II. He joined PKR yesterday.

Saiful, however, stood firm on his accusation and insisted that Anwar had sodomised him while working as his aide.

Malay daily, Sinar Harian, reported Khalid as saying that the police would take a statement from Azlan but added that it would be of no use as he was not called to testify in court.

Mat Zain, on the other hand, said that Azlan’s statement cannot be dismissed as the latter might have new evidence pertaining to the case.

“And with the latest revelation, new witnesses may come forward to testify,” he added.

Mat Zain said that it was not Azlan’s fault for not being called to testify in court, adding that the blame lied with the investigating officer and prosecution team.

He also alleged that the prosecution team might have deliberately ignored Azlan, fearing the latter’s testimony might not help their case.

“There were instances in the past where important witnesses and evidence were not presented in the court of law, for example the case involving the death of Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu,” he said.

Mat Zain urged the police to treat Azlan’s statement as new evidence and investigate the matter thoroughly before jumping to conclusions.

“And don’t close the case even before probing the matter,” he said.
