TAIPEI - Actress Makiyo and her friend Takateru Tomoyori have reached an out-of-court settlement with a taxi driver whom they allegedly beat up last month, it was announced in court yesterday.

Makiyo and Tomoyori were charged with attempting to cause serious physical injury to a taxi driver, surnamed Lin, on Feb. 2.

At a Taipei District Court hearing, however, both parties told the court that they had reached a settlement of NT$3 million (S$128,300) with the cab driver and will complete the deal by the next hearing on April 5.

Makiyo and Tomoyori attended the hearing with their respective lawyers, while Lin was represented by his attorney Chou Wu-jung.

Chou said Lin and his wife chose to forgive Makiyo and Tomoyori because they felt that Makiyo's mother, who also attended yesterday's hearing, has been sincere in wanting to resolve the matter.

Lin's family also hopes the matter can be closed as soon as possible, Chou said.

Meanwhile, Makiyo's lawyer said the actress will face her problems and ask the public's forgiveness for the incident.

Outside the court, Tomoyori, who is from Japan, apologized to the Taiwanese society and said he hopes Lin will recover soon.

Tomoyori and Makiyo will share the payment in equal amounts, according to one of his friends.

In the indictment, prosecutors had asked for a prison term of six years for Tomoyori and four years for Makiyo.

In light of the settlement, however, prosecutors suggested lighter sentences with probation.
