Ambiga is FMT’s newsmaker of the year

Unknown | 12:08 AM | | | Best Blogger Tips

Surprisingly 'people-savvy' Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak came in seventh after his wife Rosmah Mansor.
Bersih 2.0 hero S Ambiga was named FMT’s top newsmaker of the year after some 57% of its readers voted for her, drubbing more prominent figures like Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
This comes as no surprise, given the amount of headlines Ambiga, a former president of the Malaysian Bar Council, had accumulated throughout the year.
The year 2011 showered on Ambiga both positive and negative coverage, much of it due to her involvement in several rocking controversial events.

Zahid to explain RM11 million agents’ fees

Unknown | 11:52 PM | | | | Best Blogger Tips

The Defence Minister says he is ready to meet Zaid Ibrahim to get more information on the alleged kickbacks.
Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said he will explain queries on the RM11 million “consultancy fees” paid to “agents” for the government’s recent purchase of six offshore patrol vessels (SPGVs).
Former Umno law minister and Kita president Zaid Ibrahim said last week that exorbitant amount of taxpayers’ money was spent unnecessarily on consultancy fees.
This, he had claimed, could be a way for corrupt officials to siphon kickbacks made from the RM9 billion purchase of the French made SPGVs, a transaction that he and other opposition leaders claimed was rife with controversy.

Do your homework, Pua tells Zahid

The DAP man bristles at the minister’s suggestion that he relied on a dubious source of information for his statement about the ballooning cost of warships for the navy.
DAP publicity chief Tony Pua today fired back at Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for questioning the credibility of his statement about a 50% increase in the price of warships that the government has ordered for the navy.
He said Zahid should have done his homework before asking, in a mocking tone, how he learnt that the cost of acquiring the six littoral combatant ships from Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd had ballooned from RM6 billion to RM9 billion in less than a year.

Who are the Malays?

Unknown | 11:36 PM | | | Best Blogger Tips

There are two theories as to their origins, one is they came from the Hoabinh area of Indochina and the other is they originated from South China.
To the general public, Syed Husin Ali is the former deputy president of PKR. To me, he will always be Prof Syed Husin Ali, the respectable bespectacled professor who I first encountered when I was an undergraduate in Universiti Malaya.
I never failed to make time to attend his public forum, seminars and talks. He was not my lecturer, but his ideas have definitely made an impact on my thought process.
Prof Syed’s book, ‘The Malays – Their Problem and Future’ was first launched in 1978. I can still remember the book which was green in colour – and I still have it with me. I found the book intriguing and very informative to understand the history of the Malays.
When they released a revision of the book in 2008, I was perhaps one of the first to go out to buy it and read it again.
It is very important that we understand the history and we agree to the historical foundation of this country. One of the most important historical foundations that we should not argue over is about who are the Malays and about this land that used to be called Tanah Melayu.
I find that there is a handful of Malaysians who seem adamant at insisting that this country was not sired from the Malay polity and that the Malays are not the legitimate natives of the land.

Unknown | 11:38 PM | | | | | Best Blogger Tips

All eyes were trained on the sky over Alabama last week as eerie wave clouds rolled over the state.

The surreal event was captured on camera phones last Friday afternoon in Birmingham and is called a Kelvin–Helmholtz instability.

It normally occurs in regions with vast plains where winds quickly change speed creating turbulence.  A fast-moving, lighter density cloud slides on top of a slower, thicker layer, dragging out the surface and creating the wave effect.

The 44-year-old was arrested at Congonhas airport in Sao Paulo as he attempted to catch a flight to Senegal, in West Africa.
X-rays of the man's belly showed 89 capsules of the class A drug — each weighing just under an ounce.
The man, whose name has not been released, was held as he tried to check-in when cops noticed irregularities on his passport.
Police Chief Jose Alonso said the man held a British and Nigerian passport and information on the two did not match.
The enormous stash of cocaine was removed from his stomach and intestines hours later in hospital after he was arrested last Thursday.
Police said the haul was worth £286,000 and was destined for sale in Europe.
The man could now face up to 15 years in prison for drug smuggling.
